Spellbound Contemporary Ballet was founded in 1994 by choreographer Mauro Astolfi, who was joined two years later by Valentina Marini, and since then the company has enjoyed a strong international growth. With an unmistakeable style and a strong ensemble of dancers considered some of the best of their generation, Spellbound sits among the most competitive Italian companies at an international level, with an expression of dance characterized by a broad lexicon, constantly experimenting and winning over audiences at major festivals in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Over the years the Company has laid the foundations for a path where the gap between audience and artists has grown progressively smaller.
For 20 years it has held seminars and workshops, creating a chace for thousands of dancers to perform on stage. Aside from Astolfi’s creations, Spellbound’s work also includes a series of productions and projects developed through a network of international artists and institutions, such as “La Mode”, an installation by Tomoko Mukayiama and Tojo Ito which opened the National Taichung Theater in Taiwan in October 2016. From 2000, Spellbound’s productions have been supported by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
PROGRAMME
“An evening with Spellbound” collects a list of successful choreographies presented in Italian and international theatres. The different pieces suggest themes that develop around known and mysterious stories that speak with the choreographic language of Mauro Astolfi, showing the various facets of his creativity. This simple but effective format has allowed in recent years to build specific programmes adapting to the country and festival hosting the performances. Using small cameos mixed with more choral creations, the Company presents to different audiences the best of its recent productions.
In this evening, conceived for the Asian tour closing the year, Spellbound has decided to dedicate the final part of the programme to the famous composer Gioachino Rossini, whom Spellbound paid homage to with a successful creation produced in 2018 on commission and co-production with the Municipality of Pesaro as part of the Official Celebrations of the Rossini Centenaries. The closing of this programme, with excerpts from the creation “Rossini Overtures” is made possible thanks to the contribution of SIAE SILLUMINA in the project “Sillumina – Private copy for young people, for culture”.
