1905 International Human Rights Film Festival: 17 – 27 May
The 1905 Human Rights Film Festival (HRFF) aims to raise awareness about human rights violations through film screenings and discussions with filmmakers and activists. HRFF hopes to offer both Mainland Chinese and foreign filmmakers a platform to exhibit their works to an audience that is otherwise rarely confronted with such topics. The festival sees film as a powerful tool to vividly bring human rights violations to the forefront of the dialogue, as well as capturing the hearts and minds of the audience. This year, HRFF will show a mix of feature films, documentaries, and short films to attract a general audience as well as specialists.

Ma l’amore c’entra? (Is it about Love?) – Movie Screening: Thursday, 24 May
Paolo, Luca and Giorgio (all pseudonyms) were violent with their wife or partner, but their violence frightened them, also because the women who endured it were expecting a change. Their violence wasn’t bloody, it wasn’t the kind we hear about on TV or read about in the papers, but the pain they inflicted on themselves and their families was nonetheless severe. They are three ‘normal’ men, like all of us. Their stories are of everyday life, yet deeply unsettling. These three men are different in age, origins and personality – but their lives are tied by one common problem, which brought them to cross paths in the place where they went searching for help, the LDV centre (Let’s free ourselves from Violence) in Modena. But the film is not a documentary about therapy, nor about the LDV centre: it is the tale of three men, gathered by the three women who interviewed them.
