Organized in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong and fully supported by the Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong, the FELLINI 100 retrospective will celebrate the 100th anniversary of FELLINI’s birth by showcasing all the 24 films he directed – all digitally restored.

The retrospective is part of the Cine Fan programme by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, starting from November 2020.

Hailed as one of the most gifted filmmakers ever, FELLINI (1920-1993) invented an inimitable cinematic style combining surreal carnival, personal memory with incisive social critique, leaving behind an enduring legacy with his dreamlike imagery and fantastical scenarios. The core of the centennial celebration is his four Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winners: La Strada (1954), Nights of Cabiria (1957), (1963), and Amarcord (1973), all acclaimed touchstones of cinema. Joining them are the 1960 Cannes Palme d’Or winner La Dolce Vita and Roma (1972), two masterpieces that attest to the maestro’s legendary status.

Starting from Variety Lights, his co-directorial debut in 1950, to The Voice of the Moon, his final film in 1990, the retrospective offers insights into FELLINI’s thematic and stylistic evolution through his artistic oeuvre. Other unmissable gems in the programme include I Vitelloni, the 1953 film that launched his trademark collision of fantasy and reality; and Juliet of the Spirits (1965) with which he experimented with the palette of color films. With Fellini Satyricon (1969), FELLINI reinvented the myth of Petronius’ work; and in Ginger and Fred (1986), the maestro brought together Marcello MASTROIANNI and Giulietta MASINA on screen for the only time in his reminiscence of cinematic glory.

Federico Fellini 100 is part of the Federico Fellini 100 Tour, a series of centennial tributes to Fellini (1920-1993) coordinated by Paola Ruggiero and Camilla Cormanni from Luce Cinecittà, which travels to major museums and film institutions worldwide. Luce Cinecittà, Cineteca di Bologna and Cineteca Nazionale have digitally restored all films (unless otherwise noted).

The public can purchase tickets online (www.hkiff.org.hk) and through all URBTIX starting from 14 October.
