Maria Chiara Pizzoli attended the singing course of the G.B. Martini Conservatory in Bologna and the G.Frescobaldi Conservatory in Ferrara under the guidance of Maestri Fabbrini, Bojadjian and Antinori while also studying privately with Maestro William Matteuzzi, Maestro Anna di Gennaro, Maestro Roberto Scaltriti and Maestro M.Comencini.

She began her solo activity with the role of Tamiri in Mozart’s work “Il Re Pastore” as part of the Fondo Opera Festival in 2002, which continued with an intense concert activity in the opera, sacred music, baroque and contemporary fields.

At the Teatro Regio of Parma she performed several roles including: the “Voce Sola” in “The four Sacred Pieces” by G. Verdi, conducted by Maestro Donato Renzetti; Mother of Butterfly, directed by Maestro Alemanni; Ancella in Turandot, directed by Maestro Renzetti.

Finalist at the International Competition Anselmo Colzani 2003, she won the first prize as the best Mozart performance at the Competition Nuovi Orizzonti 2006 in Arezzo, ranking second overall. She won the contest Città di Pistoia 2006 in the role of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni by Mozart.

She debuted in “Barbiere di Siviglia” as Berta in August 2008 under the direction of Maestro Morena Malaguti and later as Rosina in 2009 under the direction of Maestro Ubaldo Composta, in “La Boheme” as Musetta in November 2008, and as Lola in “Cavalleria Rusticana”, in that same period.

In 2015 she recorded for “Tactus”, with harpist Marianne Gubri, the “Italian arias for voice and harp”, unpublished writings by Isabella Colbran, famous mezzo-soprano wife of G. Rossini.

She currently teaches lyrical singing at the Gardart School of Music and continues her activity as a soprano.

 

Marianne Gubri started studying the harp at a young age and obtained a Bachelor of Music Degree in 1997. She then went on to study Medieval Renaissance and Baroque harp in Paris at the Centre de Musique Medievale, in Tours at the Conservatoire National de Région (France), in Neuburg an der Donau (Germany) and at the Verona Conservatorio Dall’Abaco (Italy).

In 2002 she obtained a Diploma in Ancient Harp at the Conservatory of Tours and the Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies in Musicology at the University F. Rabelais of Tours (Centre d’Etudes Supérieures de la Renaissance).

From 2004 to 2008 Marianne worked with the International Museum and Library of Music in Bologna. From 2006 to 2008 she taught Renaissance and Baroque harp at the Conservatory of Ferrara, then in Pesaro, Parma and Vibo Valentia, as well as at Colorado University. In 2008 she founded, and has since directed, the Arpeggi Harp School in Bologna (Scuola di Arpa dell’Associazione Culturale) and is an artistic committee member of the Italian Association of Harp (Associazione Italiana Dell’Arpa). She is also the director of the Bologna Harp Festival.

In 2010 she refined her Celtic harp expertise with Grainne Hambly and studied harp music therapy with Christina Tourin (International Harp Therapy Programme).

 

PROGRAMME

Homage to Isabella Colbran

i.colbranThe programme, which also includes pieces by Gioachino Rossini, is mainly dedicated to Isabella Colbran (1785 – 1845) and is presented as a tribute to the singer, muse and wife of Rossini (1792 – 1868). In fact, while Gioachino Rossini is generally well known, not as many people are familiar with his wife Isabella Colbran .

Even before becoming the Diva of Italian theatres, Isabella had a short but intense moment of fame as a singer and composer in the Parisian salons where she was introduced by her father Juan Colbran, at that time violinist of the Royal Chapel of Spain.

The arias she composed, all published between 1805 and 1809 on the model of the arias of her contemporaries and masters, were composed in Italian with accompaniments for piano or harp. These arias were recorded for the first time by Maria Chiara Pizzoli and Marianne Gubri for the Italian record label Tactus (World Premiere Recording).

Since the end of 1809 Isabella Colbran performed as an opera singer first at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, then at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, at the Fenice in Venice, in Rome and finally since 1811 in Naples, city where she would later be proclaimed «Premiere Singer».

The aria Assisa a piè d’un salice of the Otello was indeed composed with the accompaniment of the harp to enhance the vocal qualities of Isabella, in particular the virtuosity, the vocal range and the dramatic sensibility.
