1900 (Novecento), set in the Italian region of Emilia, is a 1976 historical drama film directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, starring Robert De Niro, Gérard Depardieu, Dominique Sanda, Sterling Hayden, Alida Valli, Romolo Valli, Stefania Sandrelli, Donald Sutherland and Burt Lancaster.

1900 is a masterful historical epic ever made. Spanning through the first half of 20th century, 1900 delineates Italy’s socio-political turbulences on one hand and the conflict between peasants and the landowning Berlinghieris’ family on the other. The story focuses on a friendship between Alfredo from the landowning class and Olmo from the peasantry. While both were born on the same day, their class backgrounds and the rising of fascism inevitably set them apart. Everyone in the crew was at the peak of their creative career.

Robert De Niro, Gérard Depardieu and Dominique Sanda are all stunning in the film. Bernardo Bertolucci’s direction has an inimitable combination of operatic tone and uplifting socialist spirit. Nonetheless, Storaro’s cinematography achieves a mesmerizing vicissitude of colour tones.

Film in Italian with English and Chinese subtitles.
