Fashion can be broadly defined as a prevailing custom, usage, or style in dressing, but such a definition would simplify or overlook its nexus with culture and society. Fashion is more than a ‘way of dressing’, but a complex system that contributes to the construction of social identities and roles played within institutions and orders of discourse. Such a system permeates other popular culture artefacts and practices, shaping them through its materiality and becoming a language itself deployed to convey certain meanings. This talk will explore fashion in its intersection with society and other creative and cultural industries.
