More than twenty years after its establishment, the reference to article 1 of the law establishing this anniversary is always timely and appropriate: "The Italian Republic recognizes 27 January, the date of the demolition of the Auschwitz gates, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, in order to remember the Shoah"; a strong message also reaffirmed in the novel "If this is a man" by Primo Levi, which emphasizes the importance of memory in order not to repeat the errors and horrors of the past.
On the occasion of this international anniversary, also recognized by the UN since 2005, our Italian Cultural Institute has decided to organize an online event with saxophonist Gabriele Coen, one of the greatest Italian exponents of Klezmer music, pianist Pietro Lussu and singer Barbara Eramo, guest in three pieces of the concert. The repertoire presented is a short journey into Klezmer musical culture and Yiddish song.
That of Klezmer music and Yiddish song is a long and tormented path, which marks four centuries of life and wandering culture, starting from the lands of Eastern Europe to arrive in the United States, where the encounter with jazz provided new life thanks to key figures such as George Gershwin and Benny Goodman, Mickey Katz and John Zorn, and finally return to Europe.
