A series of meetings with journalists, writers, artists and experts from various disciplines, planned on the occasion of the opening of the first Italian library in Hong Kong. Conducted in Italian, the “conversations” offer the opportunity to converse in a relaxed atmosphere with the protagonists of Italian culture.

This series of events is co-organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong and La Biblioteca Italian Library.

Italian war journalist Francesca Borri will speak live from Afghanistan, with Gianrico Carofiglio, an Italian best-selling novelist and former anti-Mafia prosecutor.

The event starts at 5:00pm. Mrs. Borri will speak from 5:30 pm; while Mr. Carofiglio will start at 7:00 pm.

The event is presented by Mrs. Lucia Esther Maruzzelli (founder of La Biblioteca Italian Library) and is moderated by Professor Giorgio Biancorosso (Professor, School of Humanities, HKU).

The event will be conducted in Italian.

 

Francesca Borri is a war reporter based in the Middle East. She has covered the battle for Aleppo in Syria, the rise of Islamic State, jihadists in the Maldives, the leadership of Hamas, and breaking news from Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and elsewhere. She is the author of five books, her dispatches have been translated into 24 languages and she has twice been shortlisted for the European Press Prize. Now her commitment to understanding and reporting on jihadism takes her to Afghanistan to report on the takeover by the Taliban and the fate of Afghans. She will join us to discuss the latest situation.

 

Gianrico Carofiglio was born in Bari. He has long been a public prosecutor, specialising in investigations into organised crime. In 2007 he was appointed consultant to the Anti-Mafia Parliamentary Commission and from 2008 to 2013 he was a Senator of the Republic. He made his debut in fiction with Testimone inconsapevole in 2002, in which he introduced the character of the lawyer Guido Guerrieri, the protagonist of six novels, including La misura del tempo, a finalist for the Strega Prize in 2020. With over six million copies sold, he is the author of novels, short stories and essays translated worldwide and read by him in audio books. His most recent titles are the essay La nuova manomissione delle parole (2021) and the crime novel La disciplina di Penelope (2021). His many awards include the 2005 Bancarella Prize for Il passato è una terra straniera, the 2010 Selezione Campiello Prize for Le perfezioni provvisorie, and the 2014 Scerbanenco Prize for Una mutevole verità, the first appearance of Marshal Pietro Fenoglio. Since February 2021 the podcast with his daughter Giorgia, Coffee for Two, is available on the website www.editorialedomani.it.
