PROGRAMME

Being Leonardo da Vinci – An impossible interview is a show about Leonardo’s true life portrayed on stage. It discovers the story behind Leonardo, the painter, the scientist, the inventor and tells more about his authentic language, secrets, methods of working and passions.

Renowned Italian director and actor Massimiliano Finazzer Flory’s latest project brings the immensely multi-talented Leonardo da Vinci to life again on the stage. Being Leonardo da Vinci is a one-act play that uses theatre to stage the Italian genius’ true life, art, history and science. Through the format of an impossible interview, Finazzer Flory “physically” becomes Leonardo, wearing period costumes with a make-up that is a true reconstruction of the face of the genius of Vinci, and acts using Renaissance language on the original texts of Leonardo, including the famous “A Treatise on Painting” (Trattato della Pittura). Finazzer Flory’s Leonardo answers questions about his childhood, his activities in the civil and military court and how to become a “good painter” (bono pittore), as well as about the relationship between painting and science, painting and sculpture, painting and music, anatomy, botany and mathematics.

He comments on the “Last Supper” (L’Ultima Cena) and the figures of the apostles, faces his passion for water, alludes to the fashion of the time, responds to the attacks of the enemy, explains the motions of the soul, offers predictions on the flight of man and, finally, dispenses judgments and aphorisms to live our time.

Finazzer Flory puts on stage the thought of Leonardo: not the opposition between humanistic and scientific knowledge, but the search for a culture that combines art and nature, science and painting. The hand gestures and looks – carefully studied in reference to the real and alleged portraits – offer a known image of Leonardo that helps create a profile set in a mysterious scene through which the audience can experience Leonardo’s idea of a universal culture.
