Berlin-based actress Elettra de Salvo will take us on a brief journey through some of Umberto Eco’s works. The recently passed away, celebrated Italian intellectual shot to fame with his 1980 novel The Name of the Rose.

The lecture will include some pictures and videos and will be followed by the screening of the acclaimed historical mystery The Name of the Rose.

 

Umberto Eco (1932 – 2016) was an Italian novelist, literary critic, philosopher, semiotician, and university professor. He wrote academic texts, children’s books, essays as well as novels, including Il pendolo di Foucault (Foucault’s Pendulum) and L’isola del giorno prima (The Island of the Day Before) and Il cimitero di Praga (The Prague Cemetery). He was the founder of the Department of Media Studies at the University of the Republic of San Marino and professor emeritus at the University of Bologna.

He is best known internationally for his debut novel Il nome della rosa (The Name of the Rose). It is a historical murder mystery set in an Italian monastery which combines semiotics, biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory. Franciscan friar William of Baskerville arrives at a Benedictine monastery to attend a theological disputation. As the story unfolds, several other monks die under mysterious circumstances and William is tasked to investigate the deaths.

On 1986 The Name of the Rose became a film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Sean Connery stars as William of Baskerville and Christian Slater is his apprentice Adso of Melk. F. Murray Abraham appears in the film playing the role of Bernardo Gui, French inquisitor of the Dominican Order and nemesis to William of Baskerville.

About the lecturer:

Berlin based Elettra de Salvo (born in Rome) is an Italian theatre and film actress, director, speaker, theatre teacher and coach.

She worked as journalist and moderator for the German television ZDF and performed in numerous shows all around the world both together with famous theatre and dance companies and well-known artists like Marina Abramovic and Blixa Bargeld, as well as a solo artist in own productions and video works.

In 2014 Elettra published the book Italo-Berliner which describes the phenomenon of Italian immigration in Germany and in Berlin.

 

The event is part of the Italian Language Week and of Bellissima Italia.
