madrigal reached its apex and gradually declined; the growth in
popularity of the “basso continuo” and the monody induced an expansion
of the pathetic and dramatic capabilities of vocal music and opened the
door to the development of opera; instrumental music was emancipated
from voice and it built its own peculiar repertoire.
