The Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong is honored to present the live performance entitled Isn’t This Just Divine, Ethel? Roving Masks by Juno Theatre led by Italian theater artist active in Hong Kong, Agnese Perri, during the Europe Day Festival 2025, a day dedicated to the commemoration of peace and unity in Europe that this year will be held at the PMQ in Hong Kong.

An interactive mask performance exploring the journey into the world of the illuminous Ethels, masked shimmering beings who desire cheekily and bask in the pleasure of limelight. But, what happens when they are forced to reckon with the creature that lives under their shells? Developed from an original mythic creation story, drawing upon concepts of folk practices and myths, this piece explores the relationship between being witnessed and witnessing, and how it pertains to who we are.

Incorporating mask, movement, sound and gesture, Isn’t This Just Divine, Ethel? Roving Masks is a playful work that asks us to connect directly with creatures of a time stood still.

The Ethels, two masked beings, full of light, party and pleasure, play with anyone and anything they meet along their way – or at the very least they try.

The Saturday event, which is open to the public, will be the conclusion of this year’s extended two-day commemoration of Europe Day, traditionally held on 9 May every year to celebrate peace and unity in Europe. This year carries particular significance as it marks the 75th anniversary of the historic ‘Schuman Declaration’ named after the visionary French statesman and father of postwar European integration, Robert Schuman.

Schuman’s idea was to usher in a new form of political cooperation and economic interdependence on the continent – one that would make war between the nations of Europe unthinkable. His framework became the starting point for the European integration process.

The Europe Day Festival 2025 in Hong Kong aims at further strengthening the close ties between the European Union and Hong Kong by bringing people together, fostering mutual understanding and respect.
