Summer Hong Kong International Film Festival 2014
Retrospective of 7 films featuring one of the best known and loved Italian actors.
Awarded the Volpi Cup in the Venice Film Festival, Best Actor in
the Cannes Film Festival and nominated 3 times in the Academy Award for
Best Actor, Marcello MASTROIANNI established his reputation in
the 1950s with his screen image as a charming and sophisticated lover.
His impressive performances as leading man in the Fellini classics La
Dolce Vita and 8 ½ propelled him to the top of Italian and global cinema
where he remained for decades. “Marcello Mastroianni: The Great Lover”
programme features seven of his classics from the 1960s to the 1990s,
including: Il Bell’Antonio, La Notte, Divorce Italian Style, Marriage
Italian Style, A Special Day, Ginger and Fred and Sostiene Pereira.
Ginger and Fred marked Mastroianni’s final collaboration with Fellini
while in Sostiene Pereira, he departed from his image as a lover playing
instead an upright journalist taking a stand for righteousness.Mastroianni
became a film icon with his role in “La dolce vita” and, besides
Fellini, he worked with some of the greatest directors, displaying his
