Lecture_Toward A New Sustainability

The main task we should face in the future is to “mend” the city, as well as the environment, starting from the extreme fragility of Europe
now and soon to all the global territories. Mending is the right
approach, especially for the fragile situation we are living in Italy.
The “new architectural wave” for this and the next generation is to
start from what we have, “here and now” without any demolition, or
expansion strategy: renewing the suburbs, make them “beautiful” and
livable; regenerate the historical center with new program and new
identity; enhance the richness of the rural landscape, protecting it but
also bringing people and activity there again. Should we continue to
make the architects? Absolutely yes! But keenly aware of the
environmental, social and economic urge the world is asking for,
starting from local identity up to the global community.
