Andrea Cavazzuti moved to Beijing in 1981, and has been a city’s resident until today. This exhibition reveals the first three years of the Italian photographer’s long experience in China. The years from 1981 and 1984 are crucial for mainland China, and coincide with the negotiations between the Chinese and British Governments on the destiny of the territories of Hong Kong. On december the 19th 1984, the conclusion of the negotiations brought upon the Sino British Joint Declaration. The document ratifies the future of the region: its return as a Special Administrative Region to the motherland on July the 1st, 1997. Cavazzuti’s images witness a long gone China, that is essential to understand the unprecedented modernisation the Country went through in the following decades.
