The photographic exhibition Marco Polo and his footprints is organized to celebrate this year’s 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death by the Italian Cultural Institute, the Italian news agency ANSA and the City University of Hong Kong with the support of the Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong.
The objective of this exhibition is to offer visitors an immersion in Marco Polo’s journey with an emphasis on his extraordinary exploration experience, the places visited and the cultural impact of his trip on modern history. It focuses on the most significant places of his journey, through historical illustrations and contemporary photographs, further testimony to the impact that his journey still has on today’s Society.
The exhibition contains five main sections:
From Venice to China, through the Middle East: Departure from Venice: engravings and paintings of Venice in the 13th century and current images of the city, highlighting the places of origin of Marco Polo’s family.
The arrival in China, the long journey to the Land of the Dragon: Central Asia and the Pamir region (today Tajikistan), the Taklimakan desert, Kublai and the arrival in Beijing.
Marco Polo’s China: Continuing from Beijing southwards, towards the cities of Yangzhou with its canals and the fishing industry, Suzhou and the “six thousand stone bridges”, Hangzhou and Xi’an.
The other journeys: the East seen by Marco Polo: From the city of Leshan dominated by the giant Buddha, through Yaan and Logu Lake, the Yunnan region, to Myanmar (the valley of the Bagan temples) and Laos along the Mekong River. Zadoi county and Labrang city in the mountains of Tibet.
The return journey: from China to Da Nang, Vietnam, and Cambodia, then arriving in Indonesia’s Sumatra. From Sumatra to Seilan in Sri Lanka, and then up India’s west coast through Cochin and Mumbai to Bhavnagar. From India, by sea, Marco Polo arrives at Hormuz in Iran, then continues his journey across Iran and Turkey.
Do not miss this opportunity to experience one of the greatest journeys of human’s history!
