Journey to Italy – a film by Roberto Rossellini (HK Cine Fan – Restored classics)

Journey to ItalyDirector:
Roberto Rossellini
Country:
Italy/France
Year:
1954
Cast:
Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders, Maria Mauban
Duration:
97mins
Considered a precursor to the French nouvelle vague due to its
lo-fi romanticism and the influence it had on the Cahiers du cinéma
critics such as Truffaut and Godard, Journey to Italy marks Rossellini’s
cleanest break from his acclaimed neo-realistic previous works such as
1945’s Rome, Open City. Starring Rossellini’s then-wife Ingrid Bergman
and All About Eve actor George Sanders, this English-language film
chronicles a bourgeois couple’s marital struggles as they travel through
Italy with the goal of selling a deceased relative’s villa. As
befitting the title, the landscapes and architectures of Naples and
beyond are as much stars as the two Oscar-winning leads. Director Martin
Scorsese’s documentary My Voyage to Italy clearly references this
Roberto Rossellini classic both in its title and content.
