ENRICO PIERANUNZI
Born in Rome in 1949, Enrico Pieranunzi has long been one
of the best-known personalities on the European jazz scene. He has
recorded more than seventy CDs under his own name. He has played in
concert and in the studio with Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Marc Johnson,
Joey Baron, Paul Motian, Chrs Potter and Charlie Haden, performing at
all the most important international festivals.
Pieranunzi’s formative years embraced both classical and jazz
piano, and the influence of Debussy is readily apparent in the lush
romanticism at the heart of his music. Emerging in the early ’70s,
Pieranunzi’s lyrical approach quickly brought him to the forefront of
the European scene, and in 1984 he formed a trio with Marc Johnson and
Joey baron, the first of several outstandig groups with American
musicians.
In 1989, 2003 and 2008 he was voted Musician of the Year in the
Italian magazine Musica Jazz critic’s poll and he was 1997 recipient of
the Django d’Or Award for best European Jazz Musician.
On July 2010 he played the Village Vanguard and recorded live there,
with Marc Johnson and Paul Motian.
Famous writer/journalist Nat Hentoff writes: “Pieranunzi can
swing – crisply and surely. But in those tempos he remains his lyrical
self. His music sings.”
LARRY GRENADIER
As one of contemporary jazz’s most respected and accomplished bassists, Larry Grenadier
has built an expansive body of work that encompasses a variety of
significant projects with many of the genre’s most inventive and
influential musicians. Over the course of a performing and recording
career that spans three decades, he’s earned a far-reaching reputation,
for his instrumental talent, for his instantly recognizable tone, and
for the sensitivity, imagination and creative curiosity that have
established him as an in-demand sideman and valued collaborator.
Grenadier’s trademark upright bass work has been a longstanding
fixture in the bands of pianist Brad Mehldau and guitarist Pat Metheny,
and has graced albums by a broad array of prestigious artists, including
Paul Motian, Charles Lloyd, Enrico Rava, Danilo Perez, Chris Potter,
Joshua Redman and Kurt Rosenwinkel. He’s also found time to make three
albums with his own acclaimed trio Fly, and to record five more with his
wife, noted singer-songwriter Rebecca Martin.
JEFF BALLARD
Jeff Ballard grew up in Santa Cruz, California.
In a community college he studied music theory and played in a
big band. ” During this time, while living in and playing around San
Francisco, he became absorbed with ‘modern’ jazz. “ Hearing Tony
Williams play with Miles completely changed the way he played drums.
At the age of twenty-five he began playing with Ray Charles.
After three years with Ray Charles, Jeff Ballard move to New York City
where he found like-minded musicians who were drawing on tradition as
well as searching for their own interpretation of playing and expression
in music.
Currently Jeff Ballard is a member of the Brad Mehldau Trio,
Joshua Redman’s Elastic Band, performs periodically with Corea, and is a
co-leader of Fly, a collective trio with Mark Turner and Larry
Grenadier.TICKET PRICE:
